QUICK TIPS FOR SURFBOARD CARE
SURFBOARDS ARE FRAGILE Surfboards are pretty fragile considering the amount of abuse they go through. Foot prints are normal after the first sessions and surfboards break, often in small waves. Do not ride the board into the sand or in heavy shore-breaks.
BAG IT It’s all in the bag. The most common damage to a surfboard happens out of the water and in transit to/from the beach.
SUN DAMAGE Never leave your board in a hot car or in direct sunlight for long periods of time (“long periods of time” means over an hour). If you don’t heed this warning, the sun could cause your board to de-laminate, which obviously sounds very bad, and is terrible for the life-span of the resin.
WAX REMOVE Stripping the wax every season will help you keep the board clean and lets you find small cracks and dings.
GENERAL CARE AND MAINTENANCE General care and maintenance of your board is crucial. If you get a ding, give it a rinse when you get out of the water. Salt water is very corrosive, and even though fiberglass is pretty resilient to it, it will do damage over time. Fix your dings ASAP. Dings will let in the highly corrosive saltwater and will eventually eat away at the foam inside the board if the are not attended to. EPS/epoxy boards are especially bad, since they suck up water like a sponge. The foam is not as dense as polyurethane (PU), so you should immediately get out of the water if it you get a ding. In both cases, try rinse your board with fresh water, even over the dinged area. Let it dry out thoroughly before you patch it up, because you don’t want to trap that corrosive salt water in there.
LONG MAY YOU RUN A surfboard should last you a handful of seasons depending on how regularly you use it. Surfboards break, often in small waves. Do not ride the board into the sand or in heavy shore-breaks. Wash off salt water and keep your surfboard clean and dry when not in use. The basic maintenance will always be important in ensuring longevity and performance from your wave riding crafts.
Watch out for dings The most obvious sign that you’re not taking care of your surfboard is dings. They happen when the fiberglass is pushed in to create a dent. Puncture dings are more serious because the fiberglass has been cracked. Then water gets in freely and the more water is in the board, the heavier it gets and the harder becomes to ride. Don’t keep riding if that’s the case. Get out of the water and check for cracks. Some dings can be fixed with bit of solar resin but others are more severe.
Ding Repair Unfortunately, every surfboard will eventually meet the day when it suffers some type of ding. Small dings are relatively common, and can easily be fixed – at least temporarily – with a bit of solar resin. UV solar resin is available at any surf shop, and is pretty easy to use. Buy a tube and pick up a sheet of sand paper at a hardware store. Here are the steps for fixing a simple ding: Wait until the board is completely dry before you begin work; use a hair dryer if necessary. Sand the damaged area, smoothing out a nice clean pocket. Working out of the sun or indoors, fill the smoothed-out depression with solar resin. Let the resin dry by placing the board in the sun. Once the resin has hardened, sand the dinged area until it is flush with the surface around it.
